Latter-day Saints Clean and Beautify Streets of Freetown

A cleaner Freetown thanks to Latter-day Saints

Approximately 800 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Kissy Sierra Leone stake (a stake is a group of congregations), along with community leaders, cleaned and beautified major streets in the eastern section of Freetown as part of the Church’s All Africa Service Project, thereby rendering service to the community and country as a whole.

The cleaning and beautification project, carried out on August 19, from early morning to early afternoon, targeted main streets and strategic junctions including the Kissy Bye Pass Road (PWD), Ferry junction, Bai Bureh Road and Shell new road.

Latter-day Saints from the various wards and branches (large and small congregations, respectively) cleaned drainages, swept streets and roads and painted cabs and monuments in these areas.

Community leaders actively involved in this work included Honorable Alie Kalokoh, the Member of Parliament of Constituency 102; and Councilor Edwin Howard and Councilor Adissaya Kamara, two councilors of different wards (sections) within the same constituency. Councilor Howard of Ward 364 supported the project by providing wheelbarrows and brooms and negotiating for tricycles.

Expressing appreciation for the efforts of Church members, Councilor Howard said, “I have been hearing a lot about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Today for me will be a record, serving as a councilor in this constituency. I am so much happy for having you here as a Church in aiding me with some of my responsibilities of which I will not be able to accomplish now.”

Honorable Kalokoh said, “This is an outstanding and a very laudable venture. I am really impressed. This is not my first time of witnessing this Church activity. I am pleased and happy to help in any way possible. But seeing what has been done here today, I really want to thank and appreciate the Church for a work well done.”
